Training opportunity at the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)
Applications are now open for a training program in Abu Dhabi with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). This is a fully funded internship opportunity for international students from around the world. Selected candidates will begin their training at the IRENA Secretariat in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The program is open to Master’s and PhD students currently enrolled in their studies, as well as recent graduates who meet the eligibility criteria for the agency’s internship program. There is no application fee, and the exact start dates of the internship will depend on the availability of the intern and the program’s needs. The primary goal of this internship is to gain a deep understanding of the energy transition in Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
The internship duration is six months, starting as soon as possible or at a mutually agreed date. The exact period will be determined based on the intern’s availability and the program’s requirements. The maximum duration of the internship is nine months, provided the intern remains enrolled in their university and maintains satisfactory performance.
If the selected intern is not supported by any other means and is assigned to a location outside commuting distance to the chosen duty station, they will receive a monthly stipend of 4,400 AED, along with a daily accommodation allowance of 150 AED. Additionally, IRENA will cover and arrange travel costs for interns selected from outside the commuting area to and from the duty station in Abu Dhabi.

Upon acceptance into the UAE training and work program, you will receive the following benefits:

To be eligible for the program, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Educational Background:
- Candidates must have completed a Bachelor’s degree and be currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program at a recognized university at the time of application and throughout the internship.
- Recent graduates are also eligible, provided the internship start date is within six months of completing their studies.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Preference will be given to candidates with qualifications in renewable energy, climate change, energy policy or law, project finance, engineering, economics, energy data and statistics, sustainable development, international relations, or related fields.
- Knowledge and Expertise:
- Candidates must demonstrate a strong understanding of energy transition, climate change, renewable energy, and energy efficiency, particularly in the context of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
- Experience in drafting, preparing, and reviewing documents, as well as coordinating with diverse stakeholders, is required.
- Desired Skills:
- Experience in planning and organizing events, as well as analyzing and managing data, is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in MS Office is essential.
- Work Environment:
- Candidates must be capable of working in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment.
- The ability to work under tight deadlines, prioritize tasks, and work independently is crucial.
- Language Proficiency:
- Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory.
- Proficiency in Spanish, French, or Portuguese is an added advantage.
